Facial Fillers

Facial Fillers

Facial fillers have become one of the most popular treatments in cosmetic or aesthetic practices. The reason for this is that they are very effective and have a very safe profile compared to many medical treatments.

When someone gets older, the most telling signs in the face, neck or hands is the loss of volume. If you look at the baby's or young child's face, they look plump and well hydrated. As a face gets older, the plumpness goes and the face gets more sunken and wrinkled. Similarly the neck gets thinner and more stringy and the backs of the hands start showing the tendons with sunken dips between them.

Fillers are substances that are injected into the lips or under the skin that plump up the area giving a younger and more hydrated look.

Fillers can be permanent, semipermanent or short acting. They can be injected using ice to numb the lips or skin, or under simple local anaesthetic cream or sometimes using a local anaesthetic injection.

There are different substances that are used. Originally collagen was used but more and more fillers are being based on hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance in human skin that acts as a sort of scaffolding and pulls water into the skin. This gives the increase in volume as well as hydrating the skin - making sure the desired effect is achieved.
